Maryland Cancer Fund

The Maryland Cancer Fund is a resource for funding for cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and research in Maryland. The money in the Maryland Cancer Fund comes from contributions by Maryland residents in an income tax checkoff system on the Maryland annual tax return or from other donations to the fund.

What is House Bill 1000?

House Bill 1000 was passed in 2004 and established the Maryland Cancer Fund within the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

How are contributions made to the Maryland Cancer Fund?

There are two ways that the Maryland Cancer Fund receives funding:

  • Income tax checkoff system:
    • A check off box is included on individual income tax return forms beginning in 2004 tax year;
    • Contributions are voluntary;
    • Individuals may enter any amount they wish to donate; and
    • That amount will be deducted from the individual’s tax refund or added to the individual’s tax payment.
  • Direct donations to the Maryland Cancer Fund.

Who can obtain funding under the Maryland Cancer Fund?

The Code of Maryland Regulations 10.14.05, accessible from the Link below, gives specific information about how the funds will be disbursed.  For available grant applications, see below.
